Hi James --

Thanks for coming on over from Amazon; nice to hear that syndicated feed is good for something!

I'll check out your recs. I've heard of a couple of them but haven't ever checked them out as I recall. Actually, someone else mentioned Wolves in the Throne Room in the thread on John Scalzi's blog that started the meme.

As for the temporal requirements, those don't matter to me much, that was just what John Scalzi had asked about, and since my post started as a comment on his blog, I just kept it when I posted over here. :)

Greetings!

I stumbled upon (browsed upon?) your blog via its syndication on Amazon (which I find to be a pretty awesome addition to Amazon). Imagine my surprise when I realized I had found someone who not only is into very cool fiction, but also excellent music.

So, I felt I had to contribute to your musical edification (this assumes you've not already discovered what I am to reveal below); though, I must admit to being a tad lax on the temporal requirements of your request.

Bands you must check out (all have representation in the iTunes Music Store for convenient sampling):

- Swallow the Sun ("The Morning Never Came")
- Catacombs ("In the Depths of R'lyeh") --if the title doesn't make you want to buy it, there's no hope for you. ;)
- Evoken ("Antithesis of Light")
- Funeral ("From These Wounds")
- Wolves in the Throne Room ("Two Hunters," "Diadem of 12 Stars")
- Forest Stream ("Tears of Mortal Solitude")
- My Dying Bride
- Empyrium ("A Retrospective")

Most of the above fall into the so-called "doom metal" genre (with the exception of Empyrium who beautifully mix classical guitar and other acoustic instrumentation with hints of death metal).

I assume you have already listened to and really enjoy "Nevermore" and "Opeth," so I shan't mention them in this post (yes, I know their respective genres are different, but they each reflect bands mentioned in your post, so I thought I'd mention them).

Anyway, I hope my post brings new music to your ears!

Within Temptation - They sound a bit like Lacuna Coil, but more melodic. Although they aren't particularly new (formed in 1996), their Major US Label debut was last year. Plus, one of the songs on their newest album is inspired by/based upon FitzChivalry Farseer from Robin Hobb's Farseer saga.

Trivium's major label debut was in 2005.

Hey, I just posted my own list at my blog, here: http://semarkey.blogspot.com/2008/06/good-newish-music.html

I dunno if you'll like any of those bands, they are pretty light compared to what you're into. :) But I'd have to say check out Saosin. If nothing else, the drumming will blow you away.

I'll check out some of these, and let you know what I think.
