Photographic Proof of Pirates
Justine Graykin, author of “The Perfect Hook” from the Shimmer blood-thirsty pirate issue, took some photos at the pirate party at World Fantasy earlier this month.
Here’s me and the pirate wench Shimmer kindly provided for me:

Take note of the hook. Here’s me again with the hook:

Here’s Justine herself, reading “The Perfect Hook” at the WFC pirate reading:

And last but not least, here are everyday Shimmer pirates Beth Wodzinski (Captain/Publisher) and Mary Robinette Kowal (First Mate/Art Director):

If you weren’t there, you missed out! But you can still enjoy much of the fun by BUYING A COPY OF THE PIRATE ISSUE. You know you want to.
World Fantasy Report
You’ll have already noticed that I’m back from World Fantasy, as I’ve made a number of other posts today while managing to stave off the voices in my head screaming at me to make my convention report post. At last, I’ve given in, and here it is.
I drove up to the con on Thursday morning, picking up Chris Cevasco (of Paradox) and Doug Cohen (of Realms of Fantasy) at the Hoboken PATH. We managed to make it to the hotel without incident, IIRC not making a single wrong turn along the way. On the car ride up, we had what has become our traditional "pre-con" festival of geekery in preparation for the real festival of geekery.

WFC Pirate Party
In an earlier post, I alluded to Shimmer’s WFC Pirate Party, which is being held Friday night. Well, I now have other pertinent details, namely that it’s in suite 556, starting at 9:30 PM.
The Pirate Issue Now On Sale!
Shimmer Magazine: The Pirate Issue, which was guest-edited by me, is now officially on sale!
In addition to all the bloodthirsty pirate action you would expect to find in an issue labeled "The Pirate Issue," the issue also features a story–"Captain Blood’s B00ty"–in which magic is real but every spell has been copyrighted by an RIAA-like organization. In the story, there is a pirate website that lets you download stuff anyway (like The Pirate Bay, but for magic). You can read the entire story online for free here.
You can also still read "The Sweet Realm" by Jill Snider Lum, which was released early in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day.
UPDATE: I also wanted to point out that The Pirate Issue will be available at World Fantasy, should anyone want to pick up a copy there.
WFC Readings Update
Just a quick update about the World Fantasy Convention readings for Shimmer: The Pirate Issue and Wastelands. Both readings are in Suite 556 on the 5th floor of THE SARATOGA HOTEL. And, as previously mentioned, The Pirate Issue reading is at 1 PM on Saturday, while the Wastelands reading is at 3 PM on Saturday.
World Fantasy Convention Schedule
I’ll be attending the World Fantasy Convention at the beginning of next month. I’m not on any panels, but I hope to see some of you at Shimmer’s Pirate Party, which is scheduled for Friday night. When I have other details, I’ll post them here.
I also hope some of you will attend one of the readings I’ve setup for my editorial projects. Both are on Saturday in Suite 556 (5th floor of THE SARATOGA HOTEL):
- 1:00 PM – Shimmer: The Pirate Issue
Featuring readings from: Rajan Khanna, Justine Graykin, J. Kathleen Cheney, Jill Snider Lum, and Marissa K. Lingen
- 3:00 PM – Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse
Featuring readings from: Carol Emshwiller, John Langan, and Elizabeth Bear
Cover: The Pirate Issue
As I’ve mentioned previously, artist James Owen is illustrating Shimmer: The Pirate Issue. Not all of the art is done yet, but a few pieces are, such as this one and this one, and now we have the cover as well. He’s also posted a series of shots on the progression of the cover art from concept sketch to the final product.
Pirate Trailer! Pre-Order Pirates! Pirate Art!
Avast! There’s not been much activity at ye olde blog lately, but I’ve got to run up the old Jolly Roger in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day.To celebrate, the folks at Shimmer have released a trailer for the Pirate issue, have made the Pirate issue available for pre-order, and have made available one of the stories entirely FREE, which is just how pirates like stuff.
In other news, the reason the issue is now available for pre-order is that there were some slight delays, which have caused the publication date to be pushed back to Nov. 1, all set to debut at the World Fantasy Convention.
Oh, and check out some of the bloodthirsty pirate art by that rowdy seadog James Owen. (Plus even more art along with the free story!)
Shimmer — The Pirate Issue: Table of Contents
At long last, I present the table of contents for Shimmer – The Pirate Issue:
- A Hand for Each by J. Kathleen Cheney
- Captain Blood’s B00ty by Jeremiah Tolbert
- The Blackguard of God by Melinda Selmys
- Come to the Islands by Mikal Trimm
- Interview: An Inconvenient Pirate by Jen West
- The Barbary Shore by James L. Cambias
- Pirates by Adeline Thromb Age 8 by Marissa K. Lingen
- The Sweet Realm by Jill Snider Lum
- The Furies by Rajan Khanna

This was a lot of fun to put together. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product (and the artwork by James Owen!), and to hearing what people think of the stories.
