Gratuitous Hoofbeats
You know, I would be totally okay with it if I never heard another metal song that included the sound of hoofbeats and/or the sound of clashing swords. I would also be okay with it if I never heard another one of those 30-45 second interludes consisting entirely of hoofbeats and/or clashing swords.
I’m just sayin’.
(Thankfully, since my iPod is my primary listening device, and I use playlists, I can just eliminate those interludes, and iTunes lets you alter the start time of a song, so if a track opens with gratuitous hoofbeats, I can make it start at the 25 second mark or whatever.)

9:08 pm Sep-23-2008It was Tyr that set me off on the rant, because they’re currently in my playlist. Also, possibly, Sabaton and Arkona–they both certainly had some stupid interludes and a bunch of songs that began with annoying crap (not necessarily hoofbeats, but might as well have been). The problem is widespread, however, and some sense must be beat into them.

9:25 pm Sep-23-2008By the way, have you picked up Swallowed by the Sun’s “The Morning Never Came”? The more I listen to it, the more I love it.
I also recently got Esoteric’s “The Maniacal Vale” and would recommend it if you are enjoying very long-form doom metal with growly vocals.
Have you heard Arkona, Besatt, and Thirst’s “Holocaust Zniewolonych Mas…”? Just curious as to how it is…some of the samples I’ve heard sound…well, lo-fi.

4:56 pm Sep-24-2008I’m not familiar with any of those, I’ll check them out. Well, except for Arkona, which I mentioned, but I wasn’t aware of that split album you’re talking about.
Someone told me about Arkona a while back, but at the time, I couldn’t seem to find any albums by them here–but then I saw a review of Ot Serdca K Nebu in Decibel, so I went and bought it. I see that now Amazon MP3 has several albums listed, including the split you mentioned.

8:22 pm Sep-24-2008WHAT? No hoofbeats or clashing swords? Oh, the horror of music without annoying, intrusive effects to detract from otherwise boring musical bridges…
