Federations is now available for pre-order, and the website is officially live. There, you’ll find interviews with several of the authors, and three free stories—Jeremiah Tolbert’s “The Culture Archivist,” James Alan Gardner’s “The One with the Interstellar Group Consciousnesses,” and Genevieve Valentine’s “Carthago Delenda Est.”
Also, a reminder that Federations is now available for pre-order. Note that if you pre-ordered it earlier, you may need to reorder, as the ISBN changed, so stores like Amazon will have cancelled those orders, because when the ISBN changed, a whole new entry for the book was created in their system.

I just wanted to point out to Federations submitters that you should consider the deadline for submission to be 11:59 PM (EST) on Jan. 1. I realized that I never specified, and so some of you might have wondered about the exact deadline. I’m not going to be a Nazi about it, though, so if you end up with a late submission, don’t query, just send it in as per the guidelines; of course, you should make every effort to not be late.
Regarding Federations subs, can someone tell me if the autoresponder which notifies you that your submission has been received is working?
I’ve just slightly edited the submission instructions for Federations to ask that you send your stories in Microsoft Word (DOC) format rather than RTF format as originally specified. This is due to my recent acquisition of an iPhone, on which I plan to do a lot of the submission reading. The reason for the change is that the iPhone (strangely) lets me open up Word documents from my email, but not RTF. The easiest way to go through the submissions seems to be to simply open up each individual email, then open up the story file and read it that way, rather than downloading each individual file and transferring the document onto my iPhone some other way.
If anyone knows of a way (by downloading some application, for instance) of making my iPhone open up RTF docs as it opens Word docs, please let me know.
Note: If you’ve already submitted the story in RTF, there is no need to resubmit.

Payment: 5 cents per word ($250 max), plus a pro-rata share of the anthology’s earnings and 1 contributor copy.
Word limit: 5000 words. (Stories may exceed 5000 words, but $250 is the maximum payment per story, and stories 5000 words or less are strongly preferred.)
Rights: First world English rights, non-exclusive world anthology rights, and non-exclusive audio anthology rights. See my boilerplate author-anthologist contract, which spells out the rights in detail.
Reading Period: November 1-January 1, 2009
Response Time: Most rejections will be sent out quickly, but stories that I like may be held until January 31 before a final decision is made.
