Beauty and the Geek

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit that I’ve become hooked on watching Beauty and the Geek. For those that don’t know, B&tG is a reality show in which 10 female “beauties” and 10 male “geeks” all live in one house together, pair up into teams (one beauty/one geek on each), and compete in challenges designed to help the beauties become more than just a pretty face and help the geeks become, um, not socially retarded.

One thing that surprised me is how real the geeks appear to be. This isn’t one of those situations where you have people acting unlike themselves in order to get cast on the show; these guys are the real deal. And man, the producers really got a nice cross-sampling of geeks. This season they have a filker and a LARPer.

As if there were any question which one of these groups I most identify with, further evidence was provided in this week’s episode. During one of the one-on-one’s (when the beauty or geek talks candidly directly to the camera, out of ear-shot of the other contestants), one of the geeks was wearing a shirt (“Viva la Relativity!”) that I not only own, but was actually wearing right at that moment.

Pirate Trailer! Pre-Order Pirates! Pirate Art!

Avast! There’s not been much activity at ye olde blog lately, but I’ve got to run up the old Jolly Roger in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day.To celebrate, the folks at Shimmer have released a trailer for the Pirate issue, have made the Pirate issue available for pre-order, and have made available one of the stories entirely FREE, which is just how pirates like stuff.

In other news, the reason the issue is now available for pre-order is that there were some slight delays, which have caused the publication date to be pushed back to Nov. 1, all set to debut at the World Fantasy Convention.

Oh, and check out some of the bloodthirsty pirate art by that rowdy seadog James Owen. (Plus even more art along with the free story!)

Check Out the Zombie on That Cover. Oh, Wait…

One of the fitness magazines I read, Men’s Fitness, recently featured tennis star Andy Roddick on their cover. But though Roddick is a fine physical specimen, he wasn’t quite fine enough for Men’s Fitness; they enhanced his image through visual trickery to make him look more buff. It was so blatant, some readers thought they’d actually photoshopped Roddick’s head onto someone else’s body. (They didn’t; it was just airbrushing or the digital equivalent.)I could get all outraged about it, but actually, instead I think that maybe SF should do the same thing. I could try to be vague, but since the demise of SF Chronicle, there’s really only one magazine I could be talking about–Locus. I’ve seen a number of recent covers (and interior shots) that are less than flattering to their subjects. There has been more than one that I’ve seen and thought, “Yeesh, he looks like a zombie in that picture.” I mean, I’m not asking anyone to make them look beautiful or anything, but, you know, can we make them not look like zombies?
