NEWS: Karen Joy Fowler Announced as Guest Editor for 2016 Volume!

We’re pleased to announce that bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler has agreed to serve as guest editor for our 2016 volume.

About Karen:

Karen Joy Fowler is the author of The Jane Austen Book Club, which spent thirteen weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list and was a New York Times Notable Book. Fowler’s previous novel, Sister Noon, was a finalist for the 2001 PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. Her debut novel, Sarah Canary, was a New York Times Notable Book, as was her second novel, The Sweetheart Season. In addition, Sarah Canary won the Commonwealth medal for best first novel by a Californian, and was listed for the Irish Times International Fiction Prize as well as the Bay Area Book Reviewers Prize. Fowler’s short story collection Black Glass won the World Fantasy Award in 1999, and her collection What I Didn’t See won the World Fantasy Award in 2011. Her latest novel, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Fowler and her husband, who have two grown children and five grandchildren, live in Santa Cruz, California. On February 1, I finalized my selections for Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2015 and passed them along to guest editor Joe Hill. Now Joe will read the 80 stories I selected (40 SF / 40 fantasy), and choose the best 10 of each genre that will go into the anthology. The rest of the stories will be listed in the back of the book as “distinguished stories” published in 2014 (like honorable mentions).

Meanwhile, I’m pleased to be able to reveal the cover and announce that the book is now available for pre-order.

Feb. 21, 2014—Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced a new addition to its renowned Best American Series®.  THE BEST AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY will launch in October 2015 with John Joseph Adams as series editor and Joe Hill as the inaugural guest editor.
