First Review of Wastelands

This was a pleasant surprise to stumble across this morning:

Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse edited by John Joseph Adams. Night Shade Books, $15.95 paper (352p) ISBN 978-1-59780-105-8

This harrowing reprint anthology of 22 apocalyptic tales reflects the stresses of contemporary international politics, with more than half published since 2000. All depict unsettling societal, physical and psychological adaptations their authors postulate as necessary for survival after the end of the world. Keynoted by Stephen King’s “The End of the Whole Mess,” the volume’s common denominator is hubris: that tragic human proclivity for placing oneself at the center of the universe, and each story uniquely traces the results. Some highlight human hope, even optimism, like Orson Scott Card’s “Salvage” and Tobias Buckell’s “Waiting for the Zephyr.” Others, like James Van Pelt’s “The Last of the O-Forms” and Nancy Kress’s “Inertia,” treat identity by exploring mutation. Several, like Elizabeth Bear’s “And the Deep Blue Sea” and Jack McDevitt’s “Never Despair,” gauge the height of human striving, while others, like George R.R. Martin’s “Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels,” Carol Emshwiller’s “Killers” and M. Rickert’s “Bread and Bombs,” plumb the depths of human prejudice, jealousy and fear. Beware of Paolo Bacigalupi’s far-future “The People of Sand and Slag,” though; that one will break your heart. Publishers Weekly [starred review]

Yay! Harrowing and heartbreaking is what I was going for. :)

Quiz Services

I’ve been thinking about creating a big quiz on post-apocalyptic fiction, for fun, and to help promote Wastelands, but I’m torn on which quiz/test service to use. Anyone have any recommendations and/or opinions on which is the best? I’ve done a number of tests on OK Cupid, though that’s a dating site, so that seems like a bad choice for this endeavor. I thought about doing something on Facebook, but the only quiz generator I saw was related to Flixster (which is for movies, though it seems to let you create quizzes about other subjects).

Second Life

Any Second Life aficionados out there who can help out a n00b?

I read that there’s a post-apocalyptic-themed community in Second Life called The Wastelands, and I’ve heard about authors doing in-game appearances to promote books, etc., so I thought I should look into setting up something like that for Wastelands. Problem is, I’ve never played Second Life, and I don’t really have time to figure it all out from scratch.

A little help?

A Little Help, Dear Readers

Dear Blog readers,

I have a favor to ask. It’s a shameless publicity favor, but still, it should be easy enough to do. Here’s what I would like:

Please go to Amazon.com and view my Post-Apocalyptic Fiction listmania lists. On the right hand side of each list, you’ll find a box containing the text:

List Stats

Last updated: 8/27/07
Read: 352 times
YesNo

Please vote "Yes" that you found the list helpful. (Unless you think it sucks or something.)

Basically, I just want to make my listmania lists as relevant as possible on Amazon, so that when people view or search for other post-apocalyptic material, my listmania lists might come up, and thus might draw some additional attention to Wastelands.

That’s all, thanks!

Post-Apocalyptic Tests

Take OK Cupid’s Apocalypse Survival Test and see if you have what it takes to prosper after Armageddon.

Although I edited Wastelands and thus have seriously studied post-apocalyptic literature, my chances of survival are not good; in the four variables tracked, here’s how I scored–

Preparedness: 54%, City Skills: 28%, Survival Skills: 23%, Nature Skills: 0%

After you determine your likelihood to survive, you’re ready to move onto Quizilla’s Post-Apocalyptic Self test, which reveals what sort of mutant or marauder you’ll be. I scored, appropriately, as a “Wasteland Warrior.”

Wastelands Online

Today, I’m officially launching the online home of Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse. Visit the site at johnjosephadams.com/wastelands.

If you browse around the site, you’ll find plenty of information about the anthology, the stories, and the contributors.

The ABOUT page provides an overview of the anthology.

The CONTENTS page showcases the anthology’s table of contents. It also serves as a portal to information about each of the stories. There, on each story’s page, you can read the introductory header note for each story. In some cases, you can read excerpts of the stories; in other cases, you can read the entire story online.

The AUTHORS page provides even more information about the authors…in their own words. I conducted brief interviews with several of the contributors to gather some background information about their stories. While I was at it, I also jotted down their thoughts about the appeal of post-apocalyptic fiction, and asked them to name their favorite stories in the sub-genre.

The PUBLICITY page will point the way to reviews and interviews, and any news about public appearances related to the anthology.

The other two pages are self-explanatory: CONTACT provides contact information should you wish to learn more about the anthology; SHOP, meanwhile, points you toward some of the places you can buy Wastelands.

Wastelands is due to be published by Night Shade Books in January 2008. Until then, take a look around.
